Kensei: A Disappointment?

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

Kensei: A Let down?A section of the Heroes community have expressed their disappointment over Takezo Kensei’s character. His reveal was one of the most anticipated throughout the summer, however so far he seems to have not only been an anti-climax to Hiro, but also to a lot of you out there. Personally I wasn’t too impressed with him, but I wouldn’t write him off yet because often true heroes are not born, but through there experiences and interactions they make brave choices and find their way – this could be the case for Kensei.

But what do YOU think? Feel free to vote on the poll:

Heroes – The Tipping Point?

Heroes-Hype! News

Claire Butler

Whilst Heroes returned with a bang on Monday night, it’s viewing figures of around 14million, whilst steady, was not the boom in viewership NBC was hoping for. E! Online has more:

NBC’s Heroeswas the night’s highest-rated show among 18- to 49-year-olds who don’t particularly care if Marie Osmond can fox-trot or not. But audience-wise, the show failed to build on its first-season buzz. Monday’s opener was no bigger than its first-season premiere: an estimated 14.1 million viewers.

Publicly, NBC was upbeat about the show’s premiere. But its atypical request of Nielsen seemed to speak louder than its press release.

NBC has asked the ratings service to hold off on compiling final numbers for Heroesuntil the network reairs the premiere on Saturday night, Nielsen confirmed Tuesday.

A “newish” rule, dating back to 2006, allows networks to combine a show’s ratings from multiple broadcasts, as long as the same commercials are aired each time, Nielsen Media Research’s Gary Holmes said.

As a result, barring a Saturday-night blackout across the nation, Heroes will not go down in the books as having run even with its first-season premiere; it’ll go down as averaging more—thanks to people who tuned in on Monday, plus however many million tune in over the weekend.

Holmes said he believes at least one other broadcast network has taken advantage of the double-your-fun rule. As to whether it’ll become a numbers-crunching trend, he said, “I think it’ll depend on how the industry reacts to this.”

According to an NBC spokesperson, the Nielsen loophole likely will be used sparingly because of the commercial sponsorship rule. Monday’s Heroes‘ was a candidate for it because the show aired with limited commercials supplied by one sponsor, Nissan, who also signed on for Saturday.

Per the network spokesperson, NBC decided to combine Heroes‘ Monday and Saturday numbers before the Monday numbers were released.

Has Heroes reached the tipping point? Has it hit it’s head on the ceiling of no return? This second season will be very important for Heroes as second seasons are usually some of the most difficult.

The Seven Mysteries of ‘Four Months Later’

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Ok, so Four Months Later was awesome, right? I’ve almost lost count of the number of major talking points and mysteries..so I’ve compiled a list of what I think are the most important and intriguing mysteries raised from the episode and I’ve put them in a poll:

Mystery #1: Who is ‘The Hood Guy’?

“The Hooded Guy”

This one has fans across the Interweb speculating like there’s no tomorrow! Fans have dubbed this person “The Hooded Guy” – but is it even a ‘guy’? Could it perhaps be a woman? Maybe it’s someone we’ve already seen from last season? Hmm..it’s a mystery all right!

Mystery #2 Can he be trusted? Can he turn a person to Gold?

Midas Touch

Dubbed “Midas Man” by fans, just what is the true nature of his power..could he turn a human into Gold!? And most importantly, can he be trusted?

Mystery #3 Nathan’s Reflection

Nathan’s reflection

Another shocker! Nathan sees a slightly deformed image of himself when he looked in the mirror. Is this psychological trauma? Does it have anything to do with the explosion? Or is it related to the virus? This one will run and run..

Mystery #4 Will Kaito Live?

Will Kaito Live?

Surely Kaito can’t die..not yet?

Mystery #5 Where’s has Peter been/Nature of his new powers?

Where’s Peter Been?

Peter has a brand new ability and he doesn’t appear to know who or where he is! What is going on with the fans favourite!??

Mystery #6 The nature of Maya’s power?

Gift or Curse?

Perhaps the most tragic ability that we have seen so far – Without her brother Alejandro, Maya seems unable to prevent the death of those around her..but why does her power affect others like this and why do they bleed from the eyes?

Mystery #7 Can West be trusted?

Can West be trusted?

West seems a bit too pushy for some peoples liking..whatsmore you don’t spy on a girl when she’s in her room! What do you think? Can he be trusted..or does he work for the company??

Heroes Clues: “Four Months Later”

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

Heroes-Hype! Presents: Heroes Clues

Below are screencaps and analysis of key aspects and potential clues from episode 2.01: “Four Months Later”.

Mohinder giving lecture on the virus

Mohinder’s projection demonstrates regeneration and refers to ‘MHC’ – which is an abbreviation for Myosin Heavy Chains. In a nutshell Myosins are a group of proteins which are are responsible for the single/multicellular organism ability to move independently and sponteaneously.  It would appear that Mohinders slide shows an example of the rapid growth (or regeneration) of such cells. This would perhaps allude to Claire’s ability and one of Peter’s ‘borrowed’ abilities.

Map

This slide is similar to his father’s map seen in season 1, which shows the location and details of all known ‘Heroes’.

Bob observing lecture/Mohinder on paper

One of our readers asked me who the person on the paper was -I ca confirm that it seems to be Mohinder’s picture on his lecture sheet. So no conspiracy there.

Wanted: Maya & Alejandro

English translation: “Wanted: They are sought, sought by Homicide. If you’ve seen these people, please contact the national police.”

Boogey Man/Symbol

A, B and E are the images that Molly drew – presumably the ‘boogeyman’ that inhabits her nightmares. Notice they all have the ‘Symbol’between their eyes. Both Kaito and Angela Petrelli (C & D) also have the symbol drawn between their eyes. What is the connection between this ‘boogeyman’ and Kaito/Angela? It would appear that they/the company therefore know who the ‘boogeyman’ is. Is he linked to the person who pushed Kaito off the building?

Ando bumps into Nathan

By request – Yup, it is Nathan who Ando bumped into.

Curse of Maya

A, B, C & D shows blood seaping from the eye’s of the people Maya was left alone with. This is much worse than any Subconjunctival Haemorrhage! From what I gather she needs her twin brother Alejandro to be with her in order to negate the negative effect of her own ability. It is not yet clear whether Alejandro himself has a tangible ability or whether, as twin, his ability reigns Maya’s. Furthermore we do not yet know whether Maya is able to inflict herself  with this ability – though t is clear that she is terrified of what she has and might continue to do to people. Let’s hope her and Alejandro don’t leave each others side again..lest til she is able to control her talent.

Mystery Person..

The mystery person who was the ‘last person’ of the ‘remaining 7′ who Kaito expected to kill him. It is not yet clear who this is, but it’s reasonable to suspect that it could be someone we have already seen in season 1. It could also be a woman. One of our readers suggested that it could be his daughter, however from the hands the person appears to be Caucasian.

Nathan appears different in mirrors

Very Nikki/Jessica-like..only not as attractive. Just what has happened to Nathan!? ‘A’ shows him looking in the mirror (which is slightly cracked) and half of his face appears to be either burned or mutated. No doubt part of the effects of Peter/the explosion. It would appear that only Nathan can see himself like this..is it in his mind? or does he literally exist within 2 realms, which two different features? My bet is that he is mutating and this mutation has affected his mind, which appears to be fractured.

It’s worth considering whether this is connected to the ‘virus’ that Mohinder forewarns..

Peter’s latest ability

Peter displays his new ability – a fireball/sonic-boom type skill. He doesn’t, however, appear to be in control of this ability at all – it was as if someone else was controlling his action – Peter even looked at his hand as if to say ‘that wasn’t me!’.

It is not yet clear who or what he could have absorbed such a power from, though it’s likely that the people who imprisoned him in the cargo hold have something to do with it. Unless of course this is Peter’s reaction to the ‘virus’ that Mohinder warns of?

Heroes Review – 2.01 “Four Months Later”

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

So Heroes is back and boy is it back in style! I really needed an episode like that to remind why I like this show, because there’s times when I began to forget. But that’s all in the past now!

Alejandro & Maya Make a deal they will come to regret

I thought they re-introduced us to the show with silky transition and it made for engrossing and  intriguing viewing. Special mention has to go to the characters of Maya and Alejandro, because unlike LOST’s Paulo and Nikki, they were introduced to us in superb fashion. Right from the get-go I was intrigued by the pair and it wasn’t long before I became heavily invested in their story. It would appear that the twins need to stay together so that Maya’s abilities (or curse) remain dormant – I mean what a great concept..the idea that Alejandro negates her ability is one which has plenty of legs.

I’m not Claire’s biggest fan but I did enjoy her re-introduction and her journey into being the new kid at ‘Costa Verde’ high school. But more than that I am interested in her relationship with West. It will be interesting to see how that develops – he obviously isn’t shy about using his ability, whilst she has to keep her own even more of a secret. Will she trust him? Can she trust him? Who knows, but it will be interesting finding out of the next few weeks. Oh and man did I love Noah kicking..erm..finger. Nice shout-out to the Randy-Locke story arc in LOST perhaps? Infact whats with the borrowing from LOST – a new south American couple, Parkman in an ‘Exposé-like re-introduction..hmm, Kring..plagerism? Surely not!?

Peter displays new skills

All in all this was a great episode..OK, so we had no Sylar, but I don’t think we’ll have to wait to long before we see him (and the teaser at the start was GREAT!!)! Oh and Peter’s alive too..as if we didn’t know! But wow, I can’t wait to find out more about his ‘new’ ability and who put in him the cargo hold and basically what the heck happened to him!

And what about Hiro and Kensei? I didn’t see that coming – Kensei being ‘English’ (though I knew he wasn’t Asian from the spoilers). I think that story arc has alot of steam and it will be interesting to see where they take it. I thought David Anders was good, but I think he’s got to be careful not to overdo the quirkiness..there were moments where he oversold the whole thing, I think.

I got to give a special mention to the production values in this episode – comparing this to last season (esp the first few) it’s clear that ‘Heroes’ has been given a kitty that ‘Bob’ the gold-making man himself would be proud of. I mean West’s flying visuals was better than anything we saw Nathan do in Season 1. It’s so so lavish and glossy..great stuff, roll on next Monday!

Keep an eye out for my ‘Heroes Clues’, which will include screencaps and analysis of all those important and subtle bits that you may have missed. I should have these done in a couple of hours and will post them up next.
