Fan Alienation & BBC Boss Delighted with Heroes

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

HeroesBuddy TV report on the fact that some of our ‘Heroes’ have pulled out of fan conventions and the potential alienation of the fans which have made the show a success.

As Heroes second season approaches, criticism has begun to bubble up from television critics that the focus on brand and sponsorship has been alienating to fans of the story. While Heroes established itself as a hit, the empire of secondary business almost entirely relies on continued success in its time slot when the series returns.

The natural comparison in brand growth is Lost. Lost had similar, albeit superior, first season success but took a much slower approach to brand expansion. Lost’s success, as a brand, however is bolstered by an ever present organic connection with its fan community.

Ditching the chance to mingle with fans on their own turf due to the rigors of a corporate sponsored red carpet tour may not be a helpful way for Heroes to maintain its fan friendly persona.

Some valid points there – ‘Lost’(for example) expanded it’s franchise much slower. Infact ‘Heroes’does seem to be forcing it somewhat. I think they’d be better of allowing the show to grow organically, though to their credit they do seem to interact with the fans on a regular basis. It’s just that it’s a fine line and they could do alot worse than follow Lost’s ‘organic’ lead.

In other news - the boss of the UK’s BBC2 speaks of his delight at ‘Heroes’ filling the void that shows such as ‘Quantum Leap’ and ‘X-Files’ have vacated.

“BBC Two bides its time with acquisitions,” Keating explained. “We never depend on them. But Heroes – that’s the one.

“I love it. It’s a very broad, smart, intelligent piece of American television you can build on. You can bring programmes around it. It brings a great dose of smart fiction into the schedule.”

When asked what specifically about the show is quintessentially BBC Two, Keating explained: “Heroes fills a missing part of Two’s brand. BBC Two used to have Quantum Leap, it used to have X Files. Heroes forms part of a well-balanced, smart schedule.”

James Kyson Lee Interview

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

James Kyson LeeHeroes Wiki recently did an interview with James Kyson Lee, who portrays Ando in Heroes. James spoke about the fans, Comic Con, what it’s like playing a ‘human’ character, what season 2 has in store for his character and more. I’ve pulled a few of the best bits for ya.

Yeah, it’s very cool…even if your character has no superpowers.

[laughs] Well, you know, that’s the fun part, actually! During Season One, I used to get asked the question all the time, “When is Andogetting powers?” And I used to daydream about different possibilities. Like what if Ando got something unique and random, like I turn villains into small toys? Like, “Here comes Sylar!” BAM! He’s a dreidel. Then I spin him around for 15 seconds and he surrenders. Or BOOM! “You’re a yo yo!” and I bounce you around. I don’t know. I think in the supernatural world, we do need a character that a mortal and somewhat relatable. I think that is Ando. He does sort of represent the human race in this supernatural world, if you will. And there’s something fun about that. Ando’s a fun character to play because he’s able to take the audience with him on the journey. So I really enjoy that.

How do you relate to your character then?

[laughs] You know, it’s funny. Someone from the Comic-Con asked what we bring from our real life. I guess my answer was I bring my enthusiasm for women. I don’t know. [both laugh] But Ando’s a character that went through quite a bit of character growth in Season One, starting out as sort of a reluctant participant, coming out to a foreign world, and really becoming a believer. I think towards the later [part] of the season, he really kind of swapped roles with Hiroat times and started spearheading. There were times when Hiro was really down and Ando sort of became the encourager and the inspiration so that Hiro could do this. It got to the point where he went out to go face Sylar by himself because he thought Hiro wasn’t going to do it. [laughs] You know, it’s been a really fun transformation. I try to bring different aspects of myself to it, of course, incorporating all the imagination of our writers. But we’ll see. I think it’s going to be very interesting and we’ll see how things progress.

How do you want Ando to grow in the next season?

I’d love to learn more about his background and his family. Also, it seems like Hiro and Ando have known each other since they were younger than maybe some people have realized. They could have been coworkers at work, but Hiro does mention the fact that Kenseiis a childhood hero that they both grew up reading about. Of course, we have the comedic elements in the show, which I think just adds a different layer to the show entirely. And Ando and Hiro have this really great dynamic relationship. I’d love to be part of more action, you know? Naturally, I’m an athletic guy and I love being active. So I’d love to see Ando incorporated in more of that and just maybe kind of go out there and fight. You know, when we had the future episode, Hiro got to do a lot of the battle stuff. I think it’d be fun to see Ando get in the mix on some of the action stuff.

It’s quite a cool interview, check out the rest of it here.

Larter & ‘Hair’ Potential

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Ali larterDigital Spy report that Heroes stunner, Ali larter, will be doing her own hair when she co-hosts the Emmy Awards next month.

“There is a lot of work that goes into Hollywood hair and I want women to know that it is unrealistic for every day,” Ali is quoted by The Sun as saying. “I am going to go out on a limb by doing my own hair for the Emmys without any stylists.”

She added: “I am doing all of this to help women realise the potential of their own hair and feel more confident every day.”

Ali, who plays troubled mother Niki Sanders on Heroes, came up with the plan after teaming up with Dove Hair Care.

Good on you Ali – but why stop at hair? What about make-up? Do your thang girlfriend!;)

Kristen: On Life After Mars

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Kristen Bell

Kristen bell has been speaking to Entertainment Weekly about Heroes and other stuff (beware, contains some ‘slight’ spoiler stuff).

All right, you’ve held out long enough: What’s up with Heroes?
I’m on a sugar high, to be totally honest. For me, starting a new project is kind of like switching high schools — that feeling of excitement and nerves. And because everyone is so nice and I know so many people involved, I feel like I’m switching high schools — but one that a lot of my friends have already transferred to.

What can you tell us about your role?
[Elle] comes in with a bang. She’s a bit of a criminal in the beginning. I’m not even sure if they know whether she’s going to be bad or good. She has a link to H.R.G. and Peter. She becomes integral to the mystery on the show.

Did you have to do a table read or go out and audition for the producers?
No, I didn’t. Doesn’t that feel like I’m on another planet? It’s flattering. Everyone has the right to see actors audition [so] they get what’s right for their projects. But when you have someone coming to you saying, ”I know you’re right,” it just makes you blush. I’m over the moon.

‘Heroes Day’ Yay!

Friday, August 24th, 2007

A few weeks ago one of England’s best loved radio stations, Radio 1, had ‘Heroes Day’ to celebrate the launch of Heroes on the BBC. As I said, it’s a few weeks old, but what the hey! It features audio, but it has some cool hype and cast soundbites, so check it out.

But just a question – why the need to dis Lost?? :/

Heroes Unmasked – Episode 4

Friday, August 24th, 2007

As most of you know, the BBC have recently started airing episodes of Lost on UK terrestrial TV (though it has already been aired on the Sci-Fi channel in the UK), and after each episode, they have a programme called ‘Heroes Unmasked’, which gives the fans greater access to the shows mechanics/behind the scenes and all that jazz. It’s actually a good show and so I thought that i’d start posting up the youtubed episodes. I’ll start from episode 4 and hope to continue all the way through.

Credit for the videos goes to the respective people who have posted them on YT.

New Wireless Weblog

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

For those of you following the Heroes 360 Game, there’s been two new weblogs by Hana:

1st Blog Post:

TRANSLATION RECEIVED

Julián A. from Costa Rica sent me this translation to the article I posted last week. Not sure how much light it sheds on things. Read for yourself and let me know what you think.

Hi Wireless,

The translation goes as follows:

Martin Del OlmoSan José del Guaviare – All inhabitants from a small village located south of the Vaupes River were found dead by excursionists as they explored the mountainous areas of the Chiribiquete National Park. The excursionists –a couple hailing from the West of the U.S. – discovered the macabre scene and succinctly described it as “the work of the devil”. The couple has preferred not to disclose personal information.Taking a closer look at the scene, dozens more of corpses were found. All of which were found with a foil-like substance in their eyes.“We spotted the village from the mountains. As we had no more water we decided to come down to re-supply ourselves.” No life-signs were to be seen as they entered the village. It was as if life had stopped and the world had continued its course.A medical team was dispatched to the village, but there have been no announcements regarding the cause of the tragedy, but there have been no announcements regarding the cause of the tragedy. This area long believed to serve as a hide out for the Borja Cartel is known for its wealth in natural resources. Many of the native inhabitants suggest that the inhabitants of the village were often used as pawns in the struggle between the Borjas and a group of investors that have been trying to claim part of this remote region.

So far no survivors have been found.

Greetings from Central America,
Julián A.
San José, Costa Rica.

2nd Blog Post:

PANAMA CANAL

A reader from Central America emailed me this clipping. It’s a story from the Panama Canal Zone. From what I can tell, it could be related to the earlier story. It sounds like someone… or something… is on a rampage in South America. I only hope whatever it is doesn’t strike again. No witnesses appear to survive whatever it is that is happening. If someone can translate this, you can email it to me at wireless@samantha48616e61.com.
