Heroes Season 1 Rewatch: “Genesis”

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Welcome to my daily Heroes Season 1 Re-watch. I’m doing this because it’s something that I really want to do before Season 2 begins on September 24th. I want to go back through each episode of Season 1 and align my thoughts and views, in preparation for season 2, which I will be covering in great depth on this blog. This re-watch will be my own condensed take on the events from each episode as well as the season as a whole – remember, this is a ‘re-watch’ and so it wont go into great depth..i’m saving that for season 2!;) I hope that you join me on this journey and remember, after each post that I make on this blog, the floor is open for any Heroes comments or views, whether you agree with my take on things or not.

Peter Petrelli

I loved this episode – the way it opened with Peter on the rooftops had me instantly hooked. I also think that Mohinder’s inspiring voice-over helps.

Re-watching this episode I noticed many little things which i either missed first time round or didn’t give much thought to. I also noticed possibleforeshadowing – such as Peter’s dream where he see’s Nathan smiling only moments before he actually see’s Nathans smiling face plastered on the bus that pulls up beside his cab. Does this hint at Peter gaining precognition via proxy? Did he absorb some of Isaac’s ability just from spending time with Simone? That’s really got me thinking now! I also wondered about Mr. Muggles licking up Claire’s blood. What was the point of showing that, if it’s not going to mean something? Sure, dog’s eat pretty much anything, but were they planning a story arc where Mr. Muggles became indestructible from digesting Claire’s DNA? Hmm..

One thing that I didn’t like about this episode, was the seeming NY taxi driving ’ability’ that Mohinder suddenly had. I know they partially addressed this later in the graphic novels, but it surely takes an extensive knowledge of the city to be able to operate a taxi in New York!? Okay, I’m being picky but I have to be honest, that still bugs me.

Eclipse

Speaking of things that bug me – Ma Petrelli. What an awful woman! She is so cynical and patronizing towards poor Peter. Though in a funny way I guess this allowed me to warm towards Peter even more. He’s a dreamer and I like that about him, he also has compassion and heart, despite being undermined by his mother and dominated by his brother. He may have been in Nathan’s shadow for most of his life, but for me he symbolises the heart and connectivity in this episode..just like the eclipse, seeing him have the courage take hold of his own purpose and destiny was an amazing sight – even if the special effects near the end were a little shabby (I guess the budget hadn’t kicked in yet, huh!?).

So yeah, the standout performer in the episode was Peter..though I can’t overlook Mohinder, who really captured the imagination with his lecture at the beginning about destiny, Cockroaches and God. I also liked seeing his internal battle between his own cynicism and belief – the scene with Peter inside the taxi was quote touching.

I can’t end this post without a comment on Simone- OMG I cannot stand this woman..poor Isaac, he deserves better! I’m sure i’ll expand on this soon..afterall I have another 22 of these to do before Season 2 begins..yay!

More on Takezo..The “Sword Saint”

Takezo Kensei

I first posted about the Yamagato Fellowship site here - i’ve just been going back over it and thought that i’d post up what it has on Takezo Kensei. It basically tells the legend of his sacrifice for love and country - which parallels nicely with Kaito’s pep-talk to Hiro in “Landslide”.

Here’s the lowdown on Takezo:

- A wild savage turned master swordsman whose heroics helped unify Japan.

- Takezo found a sword frozen in the snow that helped him focus all his strength and courage. Some say this sword, and Takezo’s power, were a Godsend.

- With war threatening to fracture Japan, he went to the Dragon of Kiso Mountain and asked him to teach him the secrets of the sword. The Dragon agreed to help in exchange for all of his love. Takezo loved a princess with all his heart but knew Japan would fall if he did not triumph, so he agreed. The Dragon taught him and he became Kensei (a sword saint).

- With his new found knowledge, Kensei fought and won a great battle – thus saving his people. After the battle, the Dragon came to Kensei’s palace to collect on their deal. The Dragon demanded the life of the princess. Kensei refused and cut out his own heart, handed it to the dragon and said, “My love is in here. Take it.” And then he died. When the Dragon saw what Kensei was willing to sacrifice for his people (and his love) he was so moved that he replaced Kensei’s heart and breathed fire-life back into the swordsman.

- The Takezo dynasty went on to rule Japan with valour and love for a hundred years.

The site also has a rather cool 4-5 minute video chapter depicting the birth of the “Sword Saint” (Takezo Kensei). I suspect that the 2nd chapter will be up soon and i’ll keep you posted if and when.

Another Zach Interview

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Zachary QuintoI found a nice interview with Zachary Quinto by Comingsoon.net/Superherohype and thought i’d share it with you.

Right, first a few juicy extracts!

CS/SHH!: You’re friends with Kristen Bell right?
Quinto:
I am.
CS/SHH!: She’s joining the show for a few episodes.
Quinto: She is joining the show, yeah.
CS/SHH!: Did you have anything to do with that?
Quinto: I’d certainly like to think so. That was a joke by the way. I think that Kristen has a real following obviously in this world and then in television in general so I’m sure that she was somebody that they’ve talked about along the way. We were at Comic-Con at the same time this year and we came back on the train with a couple of the writers and they ended up talking about this new character that they were going to have on the show. She was sort of talking to them and she forged her own relationship with them and I think that also had something to do with it.

Interesting – so it would appear that the casting of Kristen wasn’t as ‘planned’ as I thought. I guess choosing an actor/actress to play a part can be done on the fly like that. Hey, it’s TV – a fast moving landscape.I’m not best pleased with this part of the interview. It’s kinda spoilery, so look away now if you hate that stuff.

CS/SHH!: How is shooting the movie going to work out with your schedule?
Quinto:
They’re in the process of figuring that out now. I’m not exactly sure. I think the movie starts shooting in November, by then we’ll probably be around episode 13 so I’ll be available and present and on a lot of the episodes before then. Then we’ll see what happens. I don’t know what their overall plan is.

Zach also goes onto talk about the direction of Season 2, with some interesting hints (which don’t actually give much away) on the future of Sylar. He also speaks about his upcoming role in Startrek, so read the full article if that interests you.

Zachary Quinto

I’m a BIG Sylar fan and love what Zachary-Q does with the character – so naturally I’m interested in any interview featuring the him. I found this cool interview where Zach talks about Heroes and Trek. I only post stuff that i’m genuinely interested in, so you really should check it out as I think that you’ll like it! It’s a laid back and candid interview with Aintitcool News.

No spoilers! Check it out here!

Yamagato Fellowship

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Ok..so this is cool.  Yamagato Fellowship is a site which has only really been around for a short while, however I thought i’d point it out for those of you who are unaware of it’s presence. It’s like a graphical documentary which allows us fans to explore the legend of Takezo Kensei.

Head on over to http://www.yamagatofellowship.org to check it out.

By the way it is an official site..but beware of spoilers, cos it delves into some of the themes from the upcoming season.

George Takei: Cult Icon

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

George TakeiDigital Spy have  named actor George Takei, who portrays Kaito Nakamura in Heroes, as their latest Cult Icon. In particular they laud him for his characters ‘long con’ and swordsmanship.

Okay, so perhaps Mr Sulu is deserving of his own Cult Spy Icon recognition, but that time will just have to wait! For actor George Takei’s performance on Heroes is simply too legendary to ignore

At first he’s introduced to us as a strict businessman, trying to coax his son back to the family business in Japan with some misguided intentions. Alas, Hiro tricks him into giving his brainiac sister the job instead and the family issue is seemingly solved so the cheerful tourist can continue on his mission.

But – it was all a big con from Kaito! The clever swine is soon seen in flashback in the company of Mr Bennet and Thompson, linking him to the creepy organisation that lies behind Primatech Paper.

So with revelations that make Keyser Soze weep, Kaito Nakamura has defied typecasting, age and his initial characterisation to become a true legend. Here’s hoping he’s back for the second season of Heroes, if only to show us that he’s actually a skilled ballet dancer…

A well deserved award methinks. of course it’s not a ‘real’ award, but it’s a nice acknowledgement for the Startrek and Heroes icon.

M&C Heroes DVD Review

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Heroes S1 DVD

‘Monsters & Critics’ have reviewed the Heroes DVD ahead of it’s release tomorrow. It’s a positive review and as always i’ve pulled out the most relevant bits for you.

I never took the time to watch “Heroes” when it aired on NBC, and honestly was only halfway interested in watching it on DVD. I thought that I would put on the first disc and see if it caught my interest. About 20 minutes into the first episode, I was hooked.

Unlike some TV on DVD sets (where the series’ flaws and formulaic feel starts to show upon watching episode after episode), “Heroes” manages to keep each episode feeling fresh, and holds your interest all the way through the set. As I said before, the characters never get annoying, and I never found myself waiting for one episode to finish so I could simply get to the next one.

The DVD packaging is also extremely nice and features more of Sale’s artwork mixed with stills from the show. Universal Studios Home Entertainment did this set right. They packed it full of bonus features that reward diehard fans of the show and make the set worth its price. Features include five featurettes, over 50 deleted scenes, and the 73-minute Tim Kring cut of the original series premiere that has never aired on television.

Further breakdown of the features are as follows:

Unaired Pilot: The Tim Kring Cut with Audio Commentary – A full 73 uninterrupted minutes of the original, unaired, extended pilot episode, as Heroes’ creator Tim Kring first envisioned it, with a character never seen.
The Making of Heroes – From concept to pop culture phenomenon, a behind-the-scenes look at the hottest new series on television
Special Effects – The secrets behind the eye-popping visuals that give the Heroes their amazing powers.
The Stunts – A back stage look at the show’s hair-raising stunts.
Mind Reader – Matt Parkman’s mind reading abilities reveal your inner Hero with a series of simple tests.
Profile of Artist Tim Sale – A look at the Eisner Award-winning comic book artist (Spiderman, Batman, Daredevil) behind much of the Manga-influenced artwork used in the show.
The Score – Go behind the scenes with Wendy Melvin and Lisa Coleman (of Prince’s The Revolution) as they create their ASCAP Award-winning musical score.
50 Deleted and Extended Scenes

You can read the rest of the review here. Don’t forget that the Heroes Season 1 DVD is available now through Amazon ( HD DVD version also available) and is available for pre-order from Amazon UK for a Dec 10th release.
